The lecture is dedicated to urban policy and focuses on the city of Vienna. The lecture deals with urban policy in the context of the multi-level system, works out the special features of the city of Vienna and addresses structural challenges facing the city. It provides an overview of social, political, historical and cultural aspects of the city of Vienna. The lecture is organized as a lecture series and includes specialist lectures, city walks and cultural events. Showing how Vienna has become, how it is governed, how it functions and the current challenges it faces are the main questions to be answered.

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture provides an overview and insights into the political system of the city of Vienna - a city with many special features compared to other European cities but also to politics at federal level.
Contents: The political system, political parties and elections, Red Vienna, democratic deficits and representation deficits, diversity and integration policy, political participation, memorials and monuments, urban planning and urban development.
Mediated by lectures on site and at other locations in the city

Assessment and permitted materials

The lecture is concluded with a written exam. Topics of the written exam are the lectures (lecture notes) as well as the literature, which will be announced for each unit.

In addition to the written exam, students are required to write ONE report on a museum visit and ONE report on a memorial site (instructions can be found on Moodle)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The grade is made up of

Written examination 80 %
The examination is based on the basic literature covered in the lecture and the content of the individual units.

2 Protocols on visits to museums and memorial sites 20 %
(For protocols see instructions and please note the instructions for submission)

In order to complete the lecture, a positive assessment of both components is required; this is the only permissible basis for assessment.
Regular attendance of the lecture and study of the basic literature are recommended!
