Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course focuses on the most frequetly used multivariate approaches that are implemented in most of the statistical programs:
- cluster analysis,
- principal component analysis,
- (exploratory) factor analysis,
- multiple regression,
- canonical correlation analysis, and
- discriminant analysis.

Special attention and discussion will be on the assumptions of each approach, the logic of it, how to present the obtained results, and how to interpret them. For each mutivariate approach several examples will be given.

The course will be given from November 25 till November 28, 2009. There will be three meetings of 4 hours for lectures. Practical work with the program SPSS will be on November 30 and December 1, 2009.

Assessment and permitted materials

Each student has to write a report in English language on a research
problem, for which they can find some data and analyse the data at least
with one multivariate method. They have to present the research problem,
the analyses, and make an appropriate interpretation of the obtained
results according to the research problem.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The purpose of this course is that the participants will be able to choose an appropriate multivariate approach and to analyse the data in a proper way. For this a practical excercise is necessary.

It is assumed that the students had a course on statistics (also inferential statistics), that they know some basic linear algebra and that they are able to use the program SPSS.

Reading list

There are several books on multivariate analysis, some are mathematically quite demanding. One of them that is written for non-mathematicians and is usually used for similar courses is:

R.A. Johnson in D.W. Wichern: Applied multivariate statistical analysis. Prentice Hall, New Jersey, 1988.
