Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course addresses issues such as:
the calling-into-question of the nation-state and notions of the national by sub- and supranational entities;
developments beyond the nation-state due to migration and boundary-transcending politics, communication and trade relations;
the methodological nationalism intrinsic to established concepts such as citizenship, demos, civil society and collective memory;
the normative and empirical usages of cosmopolitanism and transnationalism;
and, above all, how this unfolds in contemporary Europe and in the European Union.

Assessment and permitted materials

Essential readings and discussion thereof in class;
compulsory weekly Moodle question (25 per cent of the final grade);
submission of final paper in November 2011 (75 per cent of the final grade);
no extension of deadline;
written feedback provided by course teacher;
participants have to enrol in the corresponding Moodle course prior to the first session.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Ability to theoretically and conceptually analyse European and EU policies and politics;
building and properly presenting one's evidence-based arguments rather than 'hiding' behind other authors;
challenging previous assumptions and oftentimes nationally coded 'conventional wisdom' by scrutinising the course topics in a diverse study environment;
thorough guidelines for academic writing;
no knowledge of German is required.

Examination topics

Up to three weekly readings to be prepared prior to the respective session;
brief introduction by the lecturer;
group and plenary discussions (minutes uploaded to Moodle);
no traditional presentations;
individual coaching by the lecturer during the research process and the composition of the final paper.
