Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture deals with the manifold functions of images in politics. Images are omnipresent in day-to-day political business: they mark the field of the visible, shape our ideas of current and historical political events, become an active part of political events through what is known as "pictorial action" and lend it a symbolic dimension. Current examples from political practice and its mediatization (including election campaigns, political photojournalism, strategic self-presentation of politicians, images from war and conflict situations) are used to discuss structures, conventions, motives, and genres that are constitutive for the image of politics.

The aim of the course is to introduce participants to visual phenomena and their significance for political processes. At the end of the semester, participants should be familiar with current cultural and social science theories of the visual and have increased visual competence in the analysis of pictorial phenomena of the political.
