Aims, contents and method of the course

Course language: English

The primary objective of the course is to assist students in planning, conducting, and writing their bachelor's projects in the field of Politics and Gender, both independently and collaboratively.

The course is specifically designed to help students majoring in Political Science at the bachelor's level improve their research and writing skills. It provides subject-specific guidance, including discussions on finding topics, formulating research questions and objectives, choosing and applying appropriate methodologies, and familiarizing students with relevant theoretical and empirical literature as well as ethical considerations in research. 

Thematic focuses include 

- feminist theories of state and society,

- (anti-)gender politics and discourses, Gender, right-wing populism and the far right, 

- contemporary feminist movements 

- queer feminist epistemologies and methodologies, 

- feminist ethics 

- body politics and affect theory 

- politics of care and sexuality, theories of social reproduction

- gender and migration 

- postcolonial and decolonial theories

The expertise of the instructors lies in qualitative methods (interviews, discourse analysis, framing- and content analysis etc.)

Assessment and permitted materials

active participation in class, presentation of research proposal, feedback on colleagues' research proposal; 

Submission of research proposal, weekly assignments and final bachelor’s thesis; In consultation with the instructors, the thesis can be written in English or German. 

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Regular participation (Week 1-7, from then on at least every other week, max. of one missed session) and weekly assignments/writings (10% of final grade)
- Submitting a research proposal, presenting the research proposal (and findings), giving peer-feedback (20% of final grade)
- submitting a Chapter of the thesis (20%)
- Submission of the bachelor's thesis (final deadline: March 31, 2025) (50%)

Submission of a chapter: February 15, 2025
Submission of a research Proposal: November 6, 2024
Please note that it takes about four weeks for the thesis to be graded.

91-100: Very good
81-90: Good
61-80: Satisfactory
51-60: Sufficient
0-50: Not Sufficient
