Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar addresses the analysis of political imagery. It aims at developing visual competence necessary for the understanding of various forms and functions of visual imagery in political contexts.

Assessment and permitted materials

Grades are determined by active participation in class (10% of grade) and the quality of three assignments during the semester (90% of grade). I expect you to actively participate in class and not to miss more than two class meetings.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive grade you will have to pass three assignments during the course of the semester:

Assignment 1: Opening of a text for class: formal presentation that summarizes the key arguments of the text and commences a class discussion (20% of grade);

Assignment 2: Written summary and comparison of two journal articles on visual politics" (6 pages, 30% of grade);

Assignment 3: Written analysis of a political picture (15 pages, 40% of grade).

Please take a look at the class syllabus for a detailed description of each assignment.

Examination topics

Beim Seminar handelt es sich um eine prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung (siehe Leistungskontrolle, Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab).

Reading list

A reader with mandatory introductory texts will be available at the beginning of the semester at the FACULTAS shop (Neues Institutsgebäude). Further readings will be made available on the e-learning platform MOODLE. I recommend reading the book "How to See the World" by Nicholas Mirzoeff (2015; Penguin Random House).
