Aims, contents and method of the course

The course examines the political structures and policymaking processes of American politics at the national level of government. Using contemporary political issues, from electoral politics and budget deficits to climate change and the war in Afghanistan, the ways the basis institutions fun function are analyzed: Congress, the presidency, administrative branch, political parties, interests groups and the courts function. In the process, it offers an assessment of the current state of American democracy. Where appropriate, comparisons are made with other nations, in particular European countries. Conducted in English, the course will be based on lectures, supplemented by class discussion and presentations.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be expected to submit a term paper (Hausarbeit) based on a topic related to their own interests. The paper may be submitted in English or German.
