Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the Bachelor's seminar is to independently write a research paper. This includes the development of a scientific research proposal, independent empirical data collection and/or analysis, as well as writing a research paper (Bachelor's thesis). In the Bachelor's seminar, the students will develop a research question and a research proposal and discuss them in class. The course is delivered in English and all the course requirements, including the Bachelor's thesis should be submitted in English. The students are required to come to the class prepared, having done the assigned readings and assignments. They are also required to come with their laptops as the seminar may involve short desk-research tasks.
The research topics dealt with in this seminar should be in the following areas:
Comparative political economy, comparative politics of Eastern and South Eastern Europe.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Submission and presentation of a research question and a research proposal, short presentations throughout the course, submission of the Bachelor's thesis
- Last possible submission date for the BA thesis: September 30, 2025

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Active participation in class discussions and peer feedback (10%)

Satisfactory (3): 63-74

The plagiarism check software "Turnitin" from the University of Vienna is used to check the theses. Plagiarism is the deliberate and unlawful takeover of someone else's intellectual property; the author uses completely or partially other person's works in his/her own work without citing the source. Plagiarism is marked with an X in the transcript of records.

Examination topics

Students are required to read the articles and chapters assigned for each session and they are also required to engage independently with the literature in the field, depending on their BA thesis topic.

Reading list

The reading list primarily consists of current English-language journal articles and book chapters. Therefore, good English proficiency is required. The literature will be provided on Moodle. Additional literature should be identified independently, based on the BA thesis topic.
