Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The aim of this course is to introduce the students with gendered approach to political science, from central concepts of feminist political theory, introduction to women’s and feminist movement, and gender policies, to feminist political economy and the review of international level of influences. This is done on several levels. First, through introduction of specific concepts that grew out of feminist movement and gender studies, the course aims to challenge and critically assess the existing concepts of political science. Second, by bringing into connection the strands of feminism within political science, the course also introduces different approaches to the nature of political, hence widens the field of research outside of the mainstream political science practices. Third, through assessment and analysis of different feminist concepts and approaches the course aims to show the close linkage of “gender politics” in theoretical sense to everyday political practices, and especially to encourage the application of adopted theoretical concepts to real life examples.
Assessment and permitted materials
Reading of the required literature and critical assessing of the main concepts through class discussion are the main working methods of this class. Short home-assignments are used with the goal of learning how to elaborate theses and lines of argumentation. Class presentations and final papers have the purpose of demonstrating adoption and application of the basic concepts and building of analytical skills, amongst other. In certain seminar units the format of a small group discussion is used.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Attendance and active participation in class discussions (max 2 absence), reading of the mandatory materials and sending in a short reading-related assignment (30%; max 2 exemptions); one class presentation on the chosen topic (30%); and a final paper, discussing a selected topic through the usage of recommended literature (40%; connection of the presentation topic and final paper is encouraged).
