Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar will be based on a comparative perspective and focus chiefly on the systemic transition and Europeanisation in the new EU Member States, while offering additional insights on developments in the neighbouring countries aspiring for EU membership.

First, the seminar will provide a theoretical and historical background on the pre-1989 authoritarian regimes and centrally planned economies. Second, it will introduce the students to the politics of systemic transition to liberal democracy. Third, the seminar will deal with the international, national and regional dimension of economic transformation.
Fourth, it will shed light on the implications of the accession to the EU and the on-going processes of Europeanisation. Moreover, the course will cover a range of issues of relevance for the Central and Eastern European countries, including the characteristics of the post-communist society, changes in the geopolitical situation, regional development issues and the recent political and economic trends.
