Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Memes are a popular form of everyday communication in social networks. In recent years, they have increasingly become a focus of academic research. One of the issues here is their political potential. In addition to a playful use, the appropriation, adaptation and sharing of memes offers an opportunity to participate in political discourses. Current studies deal, for example, with the significance of memes in political movements, in election campaigns or in the creation of ad-hoc publics. The seminar provides theoretical concepts and methodological knowledge for the scientific discusson of memes and introduces participants to their analysis.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course assessment is based on three tasks to be completed during the semester. Regular participation is mandatory. Two missed seminar units will be tolerated.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive assessment, the following three tasks must be completed with at least 51 points:

Task 1: Presentation on a basic text as well as on two further, independently researched journal articles (group project: 30% of the grade);

Task 2: Written analysis of a case study (individual or group project: 50% of the grade);

Task 3: Poster presentation of the findings from task 2 (individual or group project: 20% of the final grade).

A detailed description of the three tasks can be found on the e-learning platform MOODLE.
