Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Politics is inconceivable without pictures. Within the framework of the seminar "Political Image Analysis", we will gradually acquire the competencies necessary for an understanding of political imagery and its specific functions in politics: Which conditions of production, dissemination and reception are constitutive for political images? What impact potentials are attributed to images in politics and how can they be analysed? Which methodological approaches and theoretical concepts are central to an understanding of political images? How does the analysis of political images differ from the analysis of political texts and political language?
In dealing with these questions, we will take an exemplary approach and discuss a current picture week after week (e.g. political photographs, visual self-presentations by politicians, etc.).

Methods of the course:

- Introductory lectures by the lecturer;
- Discussions of basic texts from the reader in the plenary;
- Individual and group work with political images.

Assessment and permitted materials

The assessment is based on three tasks to be completed during the semester (90% of the grade). Regular and active participation (especially reading texts and willingness to discuss) is a prerequisite and is included in the evaluation with 10%. Two missed units will be tolerated.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A detailed description of the three tasks can be found in the syllabus for the seminar, which is available in the first unit and can be accessed on the MOODLE learning platform.

Examination topics

Beim Seminar handelt es sich um eine prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung (siehe Leistungskontrolle, Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab).

Reading list

A reader with mandatory basic texts is available at the beginning of the semester in the FACULTAS shop of the New Institute building. Further and more in-depth literature is made available on the MOODLE learning platform.
