Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course focuses on empirical qualitative methods, frequently used in social sciences.
Selected methodological approaches are introduced, discussed and applied in class by means of exemplary group work and small research projects conducted by the participants (team work recommended).

Special emphasis is put on empirical research methods such as narrative interviews, problem centered interviews, expert interviews, focus groups and observation.

The course combines methods of data collection, analysis and interpretation such as

> semi-structured and open interviews (expert interview, problem centered interview, narrative interview) and focus groups,
> (participant) observation,
> qualitative content analysis,
> critical discourse analysis.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students are expected to

> participate actively in group work and in-class discussion,
> conduct a small research project – demonstrate appliance of concrete methods,
> write a research report of approx. 25 pages (relating to the research conducted)

The overall grade for the course will be composed as follows:

> research project and course paper (research report): 75%
> active participation in class (group work, plenary discussions): 25%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at

> offering students an overview of exemplary qualitative methodological approaches and
> making participants familiar with methods frequently used in social sciences.

The course is designed to enhance
> methodological knowledge and
> concrete skills needed in social research.

It further attempts to arouse sensibility and critical reflection regarding the scope and limits of relevant methods.

Eventually, students should be able to critically reflect and adopt the methods dealt with in the run of the course.

Examination topics

Following an introductory phase (general introduction to the course topic and underlying theoretical positions) the course is organised as a combination of exemplified lectures, plenary discussions, research teamwork and presentations to foster students’ methodological knowledge and practical skills.

Students will have an electronic reader at their disposal that contains selected relevant literature.
