Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture deals with political parties and the party system in Austria. However, a comparative European perspective is repeatedly adopted in order to better classify the Austrian case. The lecture focuses on the role of parties as intermediate organizations between society and the state, and the question of whether Austrian parties still fulfill this function in the 21st century. The lecture will therefore cover the following topics, among others:

- Why parties at all?
- Parties and their members
- Parties and their voters
- Parties and party elites
- Parties and interest groups
- Parties and intra-party democracy
- Parties in government
- Parties in parliament
- Parties in the Austrian party system
- Parties and their institutional environment

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be a written exam. Ten open-ended questions will be asked, which can be answered in keywords or a few sentences (no multiple choice format).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The scoring system is as follows:
35-40 points: Very good (1)
30-34.5 points: Good (2)
25-29.5 points: Satisfactory (3)
20-24.5 points: Sufficient (4)
0-19.5 points: Insufficient (5)
