Aims, contents and method of the course

Migration processes are uncertain and volatile, eluding precise conceptualization, definition and measurement. processes create challenges for the governance of migration both in the short and longer term. Most of what is often perceived as a “migration crisis”, such as the Syrian refugee crisis or the recent Belarusian border crisis, is in fact a crisis of governance. Every time “unwanted” immigration increases unexpectedly, governments and parts of host societies feel under pressure as migration governance systems are seemingly losing control due to a real or perceived unpreparedness in managing and coping with a large-scale influx and the incorporation of new arrivals.
This course examines how the development of a common EU´s migration policy has been frame in uncertainty. It analyses how actors and policy-making processes adapt to incomplete knowledge and the implication for the final policies. The course allows understanding the challenges that international migration has raised for the European integration process itself. Students will have the opportunity to conduct case-study analysis, allowing them to apply the acquired analytical skills.
