Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
the course of lectures gives an overview on two "great transformations" of Eastern Europe in the 20th century: rise and all of the )Soviet) state socialism, and its transformation after 1989/1991. Both scholarly discussions on the interpretation of these processes and the specific developments in some of the main countries in the region will be explained. (The countries are, among others, Soviet Union/Russia; Yugoslavia and its sucessor states; Poland and Hungray from East Central Europe, but as well GDR/Eastern Germany.) The main focus is not on facts and figures but on the discussion of relevant questions. Why the anti-capitalist revolutions in 1917 and 1945 were successful? To which degree the social order of socialism was equal and just? What are the conditions when democracies could get stable? Why China was changing much more successful than Russia in post-socialist times? How the crisis in Ukraine can be solved? What could we learn from Eastern Europe for the democracy theory?
