Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The increasing normalization of the populist radical right in many countries is one of the most important political developments in recent years. In addition to deciphering what is populism, and what are varieties of radical right ideologies and parties, the FOP will direct attention towards issues that especially pertain to feminist and LGBTQ politics, and to related intersectional questions regarding race, gender, and sexuality. Readings will focus primarily on Europe, yet, research papers can include case studies outside Europe.

Themes covered will include: what is the difference between populism, and the radical right? How do populist radical right parties in Europe vary in their approach to gender and sexual equality? Why are some radical right parties now led by successful women politicians? Are all radical right parties socially conservative? Are they all equally racist and anti-migrant? Are they still masculinist parties which mostly work for men's interests? How do anti-gender movements relate to the populist radical right?

The seminar will introduce students to a variety of methods mobilized to study these questions.

Assessment and permitted materials

It expects that students prepare for class by completing the readings in advance, and contributing to class discussions. Participants will complete a seminar paper to conclude the seminar.

The paper seminar will:

a) focus on a detailed literature review of one aspect of gender and the politics of the radical right
b) and will include a case study for analysis.

The paper must show that the student has identified relevant secondary literature, has understood relevant existing scholarship, and has assimilated it to frame appropriately their final paper.
