Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In order to deepen the understanding of European Integration, this seminar offers an overview of different EU policies such as economic (e.g. the internal market, trade, economic and monetary union), agricultural, environmental or social policies. It discusses the regulatory content of the policies, the decision-making processes leading to their adoption and their implementation, as well as their effects in the member states.
Assessment and permitted materials
Course requirements include regular attendance and participation, several exercises (e.g. literature search on the internet and in library catalogues), the development of a research outline to be discussed in class, a 10-15min presentation of the essay topic, and a research paper of 15-20 pages. Furthermore, students may be asked to attend relevant public events and provide summaries or discussion papers in which central arguments of required readings are critically discussed.Students need to register via univis during the registration phase at the start of the semester! Subsequently, registration is NO LONGER possible.Students MUST attend the first session of the course. If students are absent without prior notice and reasons, their places will be given to students from the waiting list.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim of the seminar is to enable students to apply theories of policy-making to one or several policy areas of the EU. Also, social scientific writing and presentation skills are trained.
Examination topics
The seminar is structured into three phases: the introductory phase first presents possible research questions with regard to EU policy-making. An overview on the different policy areas falling under EU competence will follow. Additionally, exercises in fundamental skills of social scientific writing (literature search, citation) will be conducted. On the basis of this introduction, students choose their essay topics. In the second phase, students will be divided into groups according to their chosen topics and guided in developing their research design. The third phase consists of plenary sessions to discuss student presentations.
