Classes

Each Thursday starting 10.10., 13h15 - 16h30, seminar room of the Centre for European Integration Research - EIF (Apostelgasse 23, 1030 Wien, ground floor). Participation in the first unit of the course is mandatory!

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This intense seminar offers in-depth guidance how to research political science questions in the field of EU decision-making: Who argues what to achieve which goals, how does it all add up to form a policy output? Researching EU politics is rewarding not only because this is the most relevant level now in terms of policy output. Moreover, the EU institutions offer a wealth of sources for top-quality information. The course will provide you with a guide to this maze.
The class is designed to be the very last course before writing the MA thesis and can help you find a suitable topic. Ideally, participants should have chosen the EU as one of their MA specialisations. At least, however, you need basic advance knowledge in the field of European integration, i.e. what are the major EU institutions and decision-making procedures!
A “Forschungspraktikum” is a research training course to coach how to best develop and execute students’ own research. Accordingly, the principles and practice of social scientific researching, writing, and presentation skills will be trained in-depth. Methods will include, most importantly, presentations by the teacher and the students, group work, peer feedback, and debate. You will need a good command of the English language to follow this course, a laptop to do hands-on research in each class, and a stable internet connection with working camera and microphone since there will be online elements. Participation in the 1st unit is mandatory, continuous presence throughout the semester is part of the game (max. one unit can be missed without formal attestation by a doctor or similar).

Assessment and permitted materials

Presence and active participation in each unit is indispensable. Take care: research practice courses are always particularly work-intensive since their 12 ECTS will amount to approx. 300 hours of work overall and each unit will have to be prepared.

AI and its dangers and potentials for academic research will be discussed in class. Students are encouraged to use AI to improve their texts on the level of spelling and grammar. Any relevant software used should be acknowledged in the deliverables (e.g. add list of software and AI used in for deliverable after the list of references). The use of text-generative AI is not allowed.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Grading will be based on written deliverables to be uploaded before the relevant deadline and successfully presented and defended orally (without reading from notes or screen) (65%); as well as presentations and feedback for others or debate contributions (35%). Delivery of all partial assignments is mandatory for a positive grade.

Students need to know and without exception follow the good academic practice standards (most importantly: https://politikwissenschaft.univie.ac.at/studium/informationen-fuer-studierende/#c511206, https://studienpraeses.univie.ac.at/infos-zum-studienrecht/sicherung-der-guten-wissenschaftlichen-praxis/plagiat/, click on "Hier finden Sie eine Handreichung, worauf bei der Verwendung und Zitierung von Quellen zu achten ist").

Correct citing and documenting of sources are, inter alia, a minimum basis for a positive grade in this class.
Plagiarism software may be used (‘Turnitin’) and individual interviews to individually discuss written work are possible and need to be passed. (German: Zur Sicherung der guten wissenschaftlichen Praxis kann die Lehrveranstaltungsleitung eine mündliche Reflexion der abgegebenen Seminararbeit vorsehen, die erfolgreich zu absolvieren ist).

Grading:

 1 (excellent) 100 – 90 points

 2 (good) 89 – 81 points

 3 (satisfactory) 80 – 71 points

 4 (sufficient) 70 - 61 points

 5 (insufficient) 60 – 0 points

Examination topics

Ongoing work as outlined (prüfungsinhärente LV). Students need to know and apply correctly all content discussed throughout the semester, including the research-practical aspects. An oral exam on the course essentials is possible both after the introductory phase and after Christmas.

Reading list

A list will be distributed in the early phase of the seminar.
