Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This timely course focuses on the foreign policies of the European Union (EU) and selected Member States in times where populism inside the EU is growing. The first part of the course introduces the participants to the concept of populism (both as an ideology and as a strategy), as well as related concepts such as Euroscepticism and examines the way they relate to EU foreign policy. The course also looks at the relationship between populism and political leadership and political administration. It explores the populism of the political right in the EU, and the way it relates to developments such as the EU’s management of the migration crisis, Brexit, and transatlantic relations and the evolution of the liberal international order. Furthermore, the course examines the related phenomenon of ‘Euroscepticism’, including how third parties like Russia may use Euroscepticism.
Assessment and permitted materials
Phase one presents key theoretical and empirical works on EU foreign policy and populism. In this phase, students will choose the topic for their papers (these sessions are video-recorded).
• The second phase consists of plenary sessions to hold and discuss student presentations on their seminar papers. Students will be divided into groups in line with their selected topics and guided in developing the research design of their seminar paper. The sessions will allow for in-depth debt debate of individual topics, and student-only meetings in each group. Methods include individual work, peer feedback, presentations, and debate (the online presence of students is required for their individual presentations/meetings).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Course requirements include regular attendance and active participation. In phase one students will provide short discussion papers on central arguments of selected course texts. Students may also participate in a short student-debate that takes place at the beginnign of each session. Alternatively to participating in a debate, students can present their seminar paper during phase two. Furthermore, students may be asked to attend relevant public events. Students will write a seminar paper of 12-15 pages.
