Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. Our understanding of this crisis is fundamentally shaped by the communication of politicians, climate activists and the media. This seminar deals with the specific role of (visual) representations and narratives of the climate crisis. Visual information is seen as an effective means of raising public interest. However, research shows that climate coverage often relies on visual tropics such as polar bears, which may not be an effective way to address the public. In this seminar we will look at evidence from recent research on this complex and impactful issue and conduct small research projects. Student projects can explore, but are not limited to, strategic frames of politicians, climate engagement, and (visual) news frames. Methods:Introductory lectures by the seminar lecturer, presentations on work packages, development of small projects. The seminar units take place digitally and are streamed on the e-learning platform MOODLE.
Assessment and permitted materials
The course assessment is based on three tasks to be completed during the semester. Regular participation is mandatory. Two missed seminar units will be tolerated.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
For a positive assessment, the following three tasks must be completed with at least 51 points:Task 1: Presentation on a work package (group project: 30% of the grade);Task 2: Seminar paper (individual or group project: 50% of the grade);Task 3: Presentation of the results from task 2 (individual or group project: 20% of the grade).A detailed description of the three tasks can be found on the e-learning platform MOODLE.
