Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This intense seminar is for very advanced students (ideally as the last course before the MA thesis). You need prior expertise in the field of European integration (EU institutions, decision-making processes, and policies).
The goal is to educate students in these matters and, at the same time, prepare them for writing their MA theses. A “Forschungspraktikum” is a research training course for advanced students to coach them how to best develop and execute their own research. Accordingly, social scientific writing and presentation skills will be trained in-depth.
Methods will include, most importantly, literature search, reading, academic writing, peer feedback, group work, presentations, and debate. You will need a very good command of the English language to follow this course, and a stable internet connection with camera!

Assessment and permitted materials

Presence and active participation in each unit (!) is indispensable. This intense research practice course with 12 ECTS will amount to approx. 300 hours of work – please do check if this is indeed compatible with your other obligations during this term. Each unit will have to be prepared in-depth. A large amount of reading and intense work during the entire semester is needed. Since the course will be online and last two units each week, long screen-time breaks before and afterwards are suggested.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Grading: Written deliverables (75%), presentations and feedback for others or debate contributions (25%). Delivery of all partial assignments is mandatory for a positive grade.

Students need to know and without exception follow the good academic practice standards (most importantly: https://politikwissenschaft.univie.ac.at/studium/informationen-fuer-studierende/#c511206, https://studienpraeses.univie.ac.at/infos-zum-studienrecht/sicherung-der-guten-wissenschaftlichen-praxis/plagiat/, click on "Hier finden Sie eine Handreichung, worauf bei der Verwendung und Zitierung von Quellen zu achten ist").
There will be training and a test during the early phase of the seminar which you need to pass. Correct citing and documenting of sources, a clear and easily comprehensible language are, inter alia, a minimum basis for a positive grade in this class.

Plagiarism software may be used (‘Turnitin’) and individual interviews may be held and may be graded to individually discuss delivered papers.

Examination topics

Ongoing work as outlined (prüfungsinhärente LV). Students need to know and apply correctly all content discussed throughout the semester, including the research-practical aspects.

Reading list
