Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar addresses the visual framing of war and terror. Based on the analysis of historical and actual examples, we will discuss various functions of visual imagery during acts of political violence and war.

Assessment and permitted materials

Grades are determined by active participation in class (10% of grade) and the quality of three assignments during the semester (90% of grade). I expect you to actively participate in class and not to miss more than two class meetings.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive grade you will have to pass three assignments during the course of the semester:

Assignment 1: Formulate and answer a seminar-related research question and answer the question based on at least three journal articles (10 pages, 30% of grade);

Assignment 2: Comparative written analysis of the visual framing of a conflict or terrorist act in the media and on social media during at least one week (20 pages, 50% of grade);

Assignment 3: Plenary presentation of findings (assignment 2) (10% of grade);

Please take a look at the class syllabus for a detailed description of each assignment.

Examination topics

Beim Seminar handelt es sich um eine prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung (siehe Leistungskontrolle, Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab).
