Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar, we examine the role of digital images in political communication. This includes images in social media (e.g. memes) or in political campaigns. We will look at the production as well as the dissemination and reception of digital images in a political context and examine how digital image cultures influence political debate and public opinion. In addition, we will look at the ethical implications of the use of digital images in political communication, such as the manipulation of images and the spread of disinformation. The seminar offers an interdisciplinary perspective that incorporates approaches from political science as well as media and cultural studies.
Methods:

Introductory lectures, presentations on work packages, development of own projects (see minimum requirement and assessment standard).

Assessment and permitted materials

The course assessment is based on three tasks to be completed during the semester (90% of the final grade). Regular and active participation is mandatory and part of the assessment (10% of the final grade). Two missed seminar units will be tolerated.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive assessment, the following tasks must be completed:

- Presentation on a work package and moderation of a plenary discussion (group project: 20% of the grade);

- Written analysis of a case study (individual or group project: 50% of the grade);

- Visualization of the findings from task 2 (individual or group project: 20% of the grade);

- Regular and active participation (i.e., mandatory readings, participating in plenary discussions, answering plenary questions): 10% of the grade.

A detailed description of the tasks can be found on the e-learning platform MOODLE.
