Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Terrorism is not only the use of violence against civilians for political reasons with the aim of spreading fear and terror and destabilizing societies. Terrorism is always also a communicative act in which visual images play an important role. Visibility is a strategic factor of terror. The seminar deals with the actual and ascribed "power" of terror images, which lies in the speed of their (digital) dissemination, the extraordinary shock and propaganda effect, the considerable discourse-shaping function and the influence on media and political processes. At the end of the seminar, participants should be able to analyze terror images and discuss their potentials and problems against the background of current research findings. Methods:Introductory lectures by the seminar lecturer, presentations on work packages, development of small projects.
Assessment and permitted materials
The course assessment is based on three tasks to be completed during the semester. Regular participation is mandatory. Two missed seminar units will be tolerated.
