Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The purpose of this course is to support students in the preparation and writing of their master’s thesis. This is achieved through three major types of activities: 1) reading and discussing a few short texts on research design, research practice, and thesis writing (e.g. developing a research question, role of theory, examples of successful master’s theses, research ethics); 2) interactive group and peer-to-peer exercises to stimulate creative thinking about the thesis and improve your own project; 3) presentations and critical peer reviews of outlines and chapters of your thesis. While not a requirement, in order to gain the most from this course, it would be helpful if your thesis fits into or connects with one or several of the following areas:

• Political representation
• European Union politics and Europeanization
• Political behavior, voting, public opinion
• Parliaments and democratic institutions
• Political communication
• Institutional design in international relations
• Quantitative methods

The exact format of the course will be catered to best fit the needs of registered students and their projects.

Assessment and permitted materials

• Active participation in class discussions and critical engagement with peers’ work (40%).
• Submission and presentation of (revised) thesis outlines and/or chapters from the thesis (60%).

Students can submit all written work in German or English. In case the text is in English, the presentation can also be held in English. Attendance of all sessions is mandatory. Students cannot miss more than two sessions and must attend the first session.
