Aims, contents and method of the course

The research seminar addresses political portraits and their use in contemporary and historical perspective.

Assessment and permitted materials

(1) regular and active participation;
(2) discussion of seminal texts;
(3) preparation and presentation of a research concept and a progress report;
(4) independent research (in small groups) under supervision of the course instructors;
(5) preparation of a "final product" (which doesn't necessarily have to be a written paper);
(6) presentation of research findings (the quality of the presentation is relevant for assessment).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of the course is to introduce students to a visual research process. At the end of the semester students will be familiar with methodological approaches and will have conducted their own research projects. They will be able to classify the political portrait as a pictorial genre in its formation context and context of use.

Examination topics

Theoretical and methodological introduction (course instructors); discussion of relevant terminology and seminal texts; independent research (in small groups) under supervision of the course instructors; presentation and discussion of research findings.
