Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims to offer a theoretically informed study of selected issues in Turkish Politics. The theoretical background is one of democratization and its problems in a context of globalization. We shall first discuss critical approaches to the study of Turkish politics that could inform our understanding of current problems and then focus on some contemporary controversies on the Turkish military, Nationalism, authoritarian Populism, Islamist politics, Kurdish uprising and their implications for democratization. The course is divided into four sections: The first section is devoted to conceptual tools of approaching the state –society relationships. In the second, third and fourth sections fundamental issues in modern Turkish politics and society will be critically examined. The course is organized as a bloc seminar and will take place on Friday and Saturday. Each section will last 6 hours. Attendance is compulsory. Students are expected to have completed the weekly scheduled readings before attending the class and to actively participate in class discussions.

Grading:
10%: Attendance
40%: Presentation and participation in class discussions
50%: Final Research Paper (app. 15 pages)
