Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

How can we explain the special affinity between politics and photography? Why do so many politicians believe in strategic effects of photographs? How can we make sense of their presumed authenticity? The seminar addresses political photography in a dialogue between theoretical and practical perspectives. Drawing on contemporary and historic examples of political photography, seminar participants will learn about contextual factors, functions, and effects of political photography in a changing journalistic environment. Which purpose does photography fulfill for the documentation of social injustices, the documentation of war and crisis, or for the strategic representation of social groups and political actors? Under which circumstances can political photography happen today? How do photographers, picture editors and wired agencies work? Furthermore, we want to address the following questions: Which criteria define a "good" picture? Under which circumstances can a photograph become an icon of memory for a political event? What is the additional value of professional photography, if the media get under pressure through real-time journalism and online image distribution?

Assessment and permitted materials

Grading will be based on three deliverables during the semester: (1) a written summary of an academic journal article; (2) a written analysis of a political photograph; (3) a short oral presentation in class. Regular and active class participation is expected.
