Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In today's political-economic order, the position of the individual in society is largely defined by his or her position in the labour market process. One of the most important goals of modern states is the "creation of jobs" and the avoidance of "useless work". (Hirsch 2016)

However, the way work is organized is not set in stone - this is also shown by the examination of texts of political theory history and contemporary debates on theory. In this reading course we discuss political thought from antiquity to the present. In doing so, we focus particularly on the connection between modes of legitimizing political order and the concepts of work that underlie them.

In addition to practicing a critical approach to canonical texts of political theory history, the course focuses on the analysis of argumentation structures, theses, questions and definitions of terms. We will contextualize classical and contemporary texts, work out their practical relevance, and ask about their scientific and theoretical foundations. In this way, skills in dealing with theoretical argumentation and political-theoretical texts as well as their application to current debates will be taught and practiced as central competences in political sciences.
