Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course provides an overview of structures, processes, institutions, and key players of the Austrian political system and of that of the European Union (EU). Topics are the political system, the constitution, parliament, the party system and government, the Europeanization of Austrian politics, and the development and institutional structure of the European Union. In addition, a particular focus is placed on the following themes: quality of democracy and elections (election campaigns). The (1) Austrian political system, (2) the EU and (3) the Europeanization of (Austrian) politics are being interlinked within a comparative framework of analysis. Methodically, the course is based on a combination of joint analyses, discussions, and presentations by students.
Assessment and permitted materials
In terms of a quality assurance of good scientific practice the lecturer can ask for additional verbal reflections about the writing assignments, which are then also relevant for the final grade.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The objective of the course is to deepen the respective content based on a systematic review of the provided literature, in order to gain a broader understanding of the Austrian political system, the system of the European Union and of processes of Europeanization of (Austrian) politics. In addition, the critical reception and presentation of the scientific literature as well as the competent writing of texts are practiced. The assessment scale refers to: the writing of two texts; an examination at the end of the semester; and participation (presentations). The partial performances are being weighted as follows: participation (including presentations) 25%, first writing assignment 25%, second writing assignment 25%, and the final examination 25%. All partial performances are to be provided on time and are to be assessed positively, so to complete the course successfully.
Examination topics
The examination materials are covered in a separate reader (see further specifications on the "literature" below).
