Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar will focus on 15 significant issues that currently dominate American politics such as immigration, health care, cultural issues, growing inequality, the role of religion in American politics, civil liberties and the War on Terror, presidential candidate quality, the 2008 elections, media roles and power, judicial roles and political power, gun control/crime and trade policy. It will also look at the power of American president (and vice-president). There will be one core text for the course: George McKenna and Stanley Feingold's "Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Political Issues" (paper, 2007 edition). Additional reading will be assigned and will be placed on reserve or available on the internet. The primary assignments for the seminar will be an oral presentation to the seminar and a seminar research paper
