Aims, contents and method of the course

Visual representations on the example of EP election campaigns

The research seminar focuses on the visual (re)presentations of politics, political topics an political personalities, on the example of EP elections in relevant EU member states. While main emphasis is put on the 2014 EP elections, previous EP elections (in particular the 2009 and 2004 elections) are also included, in order to allow for a comparative analysis. The latter comprises both, national particularities as well as party related dividing lines.
The research seminar concentrates on visual (re)presentations, in terms of portrait and image of politicians and political topics. The content of the campaigns is of less interest.

Assessment and permitted materials

> Regular, active participation;
> Reading of seminal texts and submission of written comments;
> Presentation and discussion of a selected text in class;
> Presentation of a research concept and an intermediary research report in class;
> Independent research (small groups recommended) under supervision of the course instructors;
> Preparation of a "research product" (which doesn't necessarily have to be a written paper);
> Presentation of research findings in class.
The quality of the presentation is relevant for assessment.
