Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

An introduction will be given into the history and development of Chinese Buddhism from its arrival in China (1st century of the Christian) era to the present. A focus will be on the special relation of Buddhism to the state in China and on the question of "Sinization" of Buddhism. Historical and dogmatic texts form various Buddhist schools will be read in the reading section.

Understanding the process of inculturation of a "foreign" religion in a new cultural environment. Historical overview on Buddhism in China.
