Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Societies of the 21st century are strongly influenced by visual content - whether disseminated through mass media or shared in interpersonal communication. From journalism research, to political communication, to gender and intersectionality research, the production, use, and impact of visuals is examined from a variety of scholarly perspectives. What role do visuals have in the digital age? Who produces visuals and with what intentions? Who has the interpretive sovereignty in the dissemination of media images? And what is the impact of visual content? What role do memes play in the political public sphere? How is authenticity of visual content evaluated? And what is the significance of visualizations in the presentation of data and in science communication? The lecture will explore these and other questions by covering theories, methods, and (ethical) challenges of visual communication research, as well as examples from various interdisciplinary topics. The focus will be on the production, selection and reception of visuals from areas of society such as journalism, politics and advertising, as well as on the visual production and visual practices of users and recipients.
