Aims, contents and method of the course

OBJECTIVES: We want to try to understand how something new is born and becoming viral in the media world.

CONTENT: We will examine media innovations of the past, try to identify possible historical patterns and venture a look into the future. The keywords are: automation (of mental labor) after the automation of material production from the 18th/19th century onwards, "algorithmification", "datafication", mobilization, "smartification", etc. – Above all, of course, it is clear that we are currently witnessing the historically unique process of digitalization.

METHOD: Distance Learning: PowerPoint slides, PDFs of literature and recommended videos/documentaries as uploads on Moodle; empirical survey on https://www.soscisurvey.de/INNO2020Weber at the start of the course; voluntary e-learning tasks to acquire bonus points on Moodle

Assessment and permitted materials

EXAM: Digital written exam with several open questions for download on Moodle.

PERMITTED RESOURCES: All resources permitted that comply with good scientific practice. Please note: You agree that your submissions will be checked for similarities AMONGST ALL OTHER PARTICIPANTS with the plagiarism software Turnitin to prevent collusion. You verify yourself and confirm your authorship. This will be checked live.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Mastery of basic scientific working techniques. Reading and knowledge of the examination literature and PowerPoint slides.

MEASUREMENT OF ASSESSMENT: Is the written exam. By voluntarily completing e-learning tasks on Moodle you will earn "bonus points" and may be able to improve your final grade.
