Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to give an introduction to the relationship of media and politics. Media and politics are two complex systems, which correlate in different areas and have a strong impact on the society. Therefore the students will get an insight into the following topics:
Freedom of expression and media and limitations
Access of Information, ownership rules
Public service media
Spectrum policies
Copyright, distribution of information
Online privacy and transparency
Media literacy
European media policy
Pornography und sexualisation

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students should:
get an insight to the mechanisms of media policy making and media governance.
know the trends and debates on media policy and governance (on Austrian, European and on global level).
be able to analyse critically the trends in media policy.
know and understand the scientific research on media policy making and media governance.
