Aims, contents and method of the course

Topic: Media and political polarization.

In the past decades, politics has been defined by “political polarization”: the political center seems to disappear, and citizens’ opinions are further apart than ever. At the same time, the world has seen an endlessly growing number of media. Citizens can tailor their media diet exactly the way they want to. How do news media contribute to political participation? What are the psychological processes that cause it? And what role do citizens’ choices in the selection of media play in this process?

In this course the participants write a literature review or a research proposal on a topic of their choice in the field of media and political polarization. The aim is to produce a literature review in English that meets scientific criteria. The literature review will be written step by step during the semester - starting with the development of a topic idea, through the creation of a concept paper to the final paper. Participants receive feedback on the individual steps from the teacher, which enables continuous revision and improvement of the content. Although the paper needs to written in clear English, the grade is not dependent on English proficiency.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are assessed on the following factors:

a) Participation in the seminar (10%)
b) Homework assignments (25%)
1. Homework assignment 1 – finding a topic (7,5%)
2. Homework assignment 2 – writing and citing (7,5%)
3. Homework assignment 3 – Concept literature review (10%)
c) Presentation of the concept paper in class (15%)
d) The final seminar paper (50%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To complete this course, students have to be present at least 75% of the classes. This means that you can only miss maximum three classes, in total.

Examination topics

At the end of this course, students should:
-have basic knowledge of the scientific literature about media and political polarization.
-be able to read and understand scientific articles independently
-be able to use quotes and citations in a scientific manner
-be able to integrate scientific research into a coherent paper

Reading list

The exact literature list will be made available at the beginning of the course and will exist of 5-8 scientific articles. These articles can also be used in the final paper.

Thema: Wie beeinflussen Medien unsere mentale Gesundheit?

Wie beeinflusst Mediennutzung wie wir uns fühlen? Reduzieren Smartphones unsere Lebenszufriedenheit, verbessert TikTok unsere Laune, macht uns Instagram neidisch? Im Seminar werden wir der Frage nachgehen, inwiefern unterschiedliche Medienformate spezifische Bereiche der mentalen Gesundheit beeinflussen.

Wir befassen uns hierzu zuerst inhaltlich und theoretisch mit Mediennutzung und mentaler Gesundheit. Anschließend werden individuelle Forschungskonzepte erarbeitet, in der alle Teilnehmer:innen eine eigene Fragestellung entwerfen. Die Forschungskonzepte werden in der Gruppe vorgestellt und diskutiert.

Die Fragestellung wird anschließend anhand eines eigenständig recherchierten, bereits bestehenden Datensatzes empirisch geprüft. Als Software nutzen wir R; als Hilfestellung wird u.a. eine Vorlage für die Abschlussarbeit bereitgestellt und besprochen. Die Ergebnisse werden in einer Abschlussarbeit verschriftlicht.

Anwesenheit und aktive Mitarbeit (unbenotet), Präsentation des Zwischenstandes (unbenotet), Abgabe der Abschlussarbeit (benotet).

Formale Details zur Abschlussarbeit werden zu Beginn der Veranstaltung bekannt gegeben (voraussichtlich max. 3.000 Wörter, exkl. Literatur/Anhang/Syntax).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Regelmäßige Anwesenheit (max. 2 Fehltage)
- Inhaltliche Mitarbeit und Lektürestudium (unbenotet)
- Bereitschaft und Motivation, sich in R einzuarbeiten
- Fristgerechte Abgabe der Proseminararbeit am Ende des Semesters (benotet)

Die Note der Arbeit basiert auf einem Prozentsystem:
=90% = A (1), =80% = B (2), =70% = C (3), =60% = D (4), < 60% = E (5).

Aims, contents and method of the course

Basierend auf aktuellen wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen wird zur Thematik Empathie/ bzw. politische Einstellung ein gesamter Forschungsprozess praktisch durchgearbeitet. Dabei wird der Fokus auf die Planung und Durchführung einer empirischen (quantitativen) Arbeit gelegt. Von der Formulierung einer Hypothese aus wird ein Experiment geplant und ausgeführt, die daraus gewonnenen Daten werden statistisch ausgewertet und interpretiert. Am Ende steht ein individuell erstellter Forschungsbericht, der alle Teilbereiche eines Journalartikels enthält.
Diese Lehrveranstaltung wird entsprechend der Möglichkeiten als Präsenz- und/ oder auch Online Veranstaltung abgehalten. (hybride Lehre)

Assessment and permitted materials

Fristgerechte Präsentation einer Idee mit dazugehörigem Forschungskonzept das wissenschaftlich umgesetzt werden kann; Durchführung des Projekts (in Kleingruppen möglich) und Auswertung der Daten (einzeln);
Eigenständiges Verfassen einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit (einzeln) mit Theorie- und Empirie- und Diskussionsteil;

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Für eine positive Note muss die Präsentation fristgerecht gehalten werden, die Abschlussarbeit zum vorgegebenen Zeitpunkt (05.02.2021) einlangen und den inhaltlichen Anforderungen gerecht werden.

Topic: Fake news, disinformation, post-Truth discourses, political media criticism

In this course the participants write a seminar paper on a topic of their choice in the field of fake news, disinformation, post-Truth discourse and political media criticism ("lie press"/"fake news" allegations).

The aim is to produce a literature paper in German (optionally also in English) that meets scientific criteria. The seminar paper will be written step by step during the semester - starting with the development of a topic idea, through the creation of a concept to the completion of the paper. Participants receive feedback on the individual steps from the course director, which enables continuous revision and improvement of the content.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in the seminar; completion of all homework exercises; presentation of the concept; submission of the proseminar paper in due time.

Homework exercises: 20%.
Presentation concept: 10%.
Proseminar paper: 70%

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance in the first unit is compulsory to ensure participation in the course. Maximum of one missed session (3 hours each).
Further requirements are the timely and complete submission of the exercises and timely submission of the proseminar paper at the end of the seminar.

Assessment of grading:
1 (Very good): 87 - 100%
2 (good): 75 - 86.99%
3 (Satisfactory): 63 - 74.99%
4 (Sufficient): 50 - 62.99%
5 (Not sufficient): 00 - 49.99%

In this course you will learn how to conduct research, including how to write a literature review, identify research gaps/ideas, select appropriate research methods, and how to do fieldwork (interviews, focus groups etc.)

These research steps will be taught around the research area of 'Audiences'. You will be able to identify a specific research topic on 'audiences' that you are interested in and develop this in your assignments.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment will be based on two assignments:
1. a literature review on an idea of interest
2. group assignment: description of chosen research method and presentation
3. final assignment: fieldwork and report of research findings

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

You are expected to attend 6 out of the 7 seminars in total.

#Skandal – Zur Anatomie einer aufgeregten Gesellschaft

Welche Wirkmacht Skandale nach sich zu ziehen vermögen, konnten die ÖsterreicherInnen spätestens im Mai 2019 beobachten. PolitikerInnen und Regierungen werden zu Fall gebracht, Wirtschaftsfelder erscheinen in einem neuen Licht und SportlerInnen- wie auch KünstlerInnenkarrieren finden ein plötzliches Ende. Ziel dieser LV ist es Diskursverläufe von mediatisierten Skandalen und damit die Verhandlung von Empörung verursachenden Affären in unterschiedlichen Medien zu untersuchen. Was sagen uns diese medial vermittelten Aufschreie über den Zustand unserer Gesellschaft? Wie stellen sich Skandalverläufe der Vergangenheit im Vergleich mit jenen der Gegenwart dar? Welche argumentativen Strategien wenden die Beteiligten an und welche Instrumente der Skandalisierung kommen zum Einsatz? Welche Kommunikationskanäle werden zur Propagierung und öffentlichen Verhandlung des Themas genutzt? Gibt es kulturelle Unterschiede in der Skandalisierung? Diese Fragen sollen uns im Rahmen der LV beschäftigen und zur Entstehung ihrer Proseminararbeit (=Einzelarbeit) beitragen. Diese kann sowohl eine theoretische Literaturarbeit als auch eine kleinere empirische Arbeit darstellen.

Im Laufe des Semesters werden die Studierenden bei der Erarbeitung ihrer Proseminararbeit Schritt für Schritt begleitet: Von der Themenfindung zur Literaturrecherche und -erarbeitung über die Entwicklung eines theoretischen (und methodischen) Konzepts für die eigene Arbeit bis zum Verfassen der Proseminararbeit. Input der LV-Leitung, Präsentation der Studierenden, Anleitung konkreter Arbeitsschritte und gemeinsame Reflexion dieser im Plenum stellen den Inhalt der LV dar.

Vorarbeiten sind nicht nötig, wir erarbeiten uns alles gemeinsam im Laufe des Wochenendes. Danach sollten Sie in der Lage sein, selbständig einen Forschungsprozess zu planen und in weiterer Folge auch umsetzen zu können.
