Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

During Semester 1 (spring/summer term), students will work on developing the conceptual background, theory and literature review, research questions, and methodology.
During Semester 2 (fall/winter term) students will conduct fieldwork for the studies developed during Semester 1, analysis of results and writing-up process.
The subject matter of any research project will focus on matters of governance: this is a broadly enough area which deals with not only law, regulation, policy in their more traditional sense and the media, but also can encompass projects that seek to understand the ways in which other factors, such as practices, ideas and values, social action/activism etc seek to 'regulate' communications and the media. We deal with questions of power and politics, ethics, regulatory frameworks which can include state regulation (censorship, regulating social media etc) or private forms such as misinformation guidelines on twitter- as examples. In particular projects on aspects of Europe, misinformation/informational rights (privacy/anonymity/access to information/freedom of expression etc) are mostly welcome.
Those willing to participate in projects around these issues will be accepted on the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence FREuDe as associate members (http://media governance.univie.ac.at)
Two specific social groups FREuDe focuses on are children/youth and refugees

Moreover, students working on European dimensions of above issues and who are submitting a blogpost will be admitted as student members of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence.
