Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course deals with research designs and data collection in communication science and is composed of two integrated parts: Introduction to Research Designs and Data Collection (VO) and Planning Research Designs and Data Collection (UE).
The course deals with qualitative, quantitative and computational research methods in Communication Science. Students learn to independently formulate, justify and apply a complete research design on the basis of a self-chosen method based on a given communication-scientific research question. Additionally, students learn to critically evaluate empirical communication studies and suggest and implement areas for improvement.
The lectures will emphasize theoretical aspects of study planning and design, while the exercise part will have a more practical focus, demonstrating research design and data collection procedures. Students will actively engage by analyzing and discussing empirical studies published in scientific journals. They will also be guided through hands-on, practical laboratory sessions where they can practice research design and data collection techniques. A central objective of this course is to provide an overview of various approaches to designing studies and collecting data in communication science. It aims to equip participants with the skills needed to independently conduct their own research projects.

Assessment and permitted materials

For the lecture part (VO), students will complete a final written exam at the end of the semester. For the exercise part (UE), students will collaborate in groups for assignments and brief presentations.
