Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this lecture and discussion series we will challenge and interrogate important concepts of freedom of expression and seek for a holistic and gender-sensitive conceptualization of media freedom. Together, we will examine how normative ideas about press freedom, media pluralism and independence influence gender equality, a prerequisite for human rights, democracy and social justice. The lectures will focus on the different concepts of and related to gender, as well as the historical antecedents and broader societal aspects of gender as a critical idea challenging both conceptual and structural elements of recent and current thinking.

Together with invited special guests involved in media and communication policy-making, regulation and advocacy, we will discuss
- a gendered reading of the notion of the ‘Freedom of Expression’,
- current trends in media freedom through a gender-lens,
- future perspectives on the role of new media technologies and Artificial Intelligence in challenging and/or reaffirming traditional constructions of gender; and
reflect on gender equality and social justice with the help of feminist media theory.
