Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course links the content-related introduction to sociology with the practice of scientific work. The Proseminar expands the introductory lectures with the active application of central sociological concepts and questions using practical exercises in scientific work. Through their own presentations, discussions and contributions, students learn how to research literature, handle scientific literature, present and critique, formulate a central question, cite correctly and write a seminar paper. The skills acquired are essential for writing seminar papers and will accompany the students throughout their studies. The aim is to develop an understanding of what the working techniques of sociology are and how sociological research is conducted. In doing so, students sharpen their perspectives on social phenomena and societies. They are also introduced to some of the key fields of current research and applications in sociology.

The learning objectives of the course are:

- Research literature independently
- Read texts critically and purposefully
- Identify relevant sociological issues
- Dealing with scientific texts: excerpting, documenting, further processing
- Citing and quoting sources correctly
- Develop, present and constructively criticise research ideas and questions.
- Writing academic papers: planning, structuring, arguing, criticising, providing evidence.
- Introducing the perspectives and ways of thinking in sociology
- Reflecting on selected sociological research fields

Assessment and permitted materials

Immanent examination character (compulsory attendance, max. 2 missing units). Assessment based on regular written and oral contributions of the participants. Interactive course work, written partial performances, presentations and discussions, and Proseminar paper.
---
Note of the SPL Sociology:
Completing all partial performances is a prerequisite for a positive assessment unless explicitly stated otherwise.
All students who have been given a course place are to be assessed unless they have deregistered in good time or immediately after the obstacle has ceased to exist. They can credibly show an essential reason for not having done so.
If such a reason exists (e.g. a more prolonged illness), the student can be deregistered from the course even after the deadline has expired.

The head of the course decides on the existence of an important reason. The application for deregistration must be submitted immediately. If a partial performance has been cheated, i.e. cheated on an examination or a test, plagiarised in a written paper or forged signatures on attendance lists, the entire course will be assessed as "not assessed" and recorded accordingly.
These and other regulations can be found in the study regulations section: https://satzung.univie.ac.at/studienrecht/.

If you have already failed an assessment-immanent course three times and want to register for a fourth attempt, please contact the Sociology Student Services Office (cf. for additional information "Third repetition for assessment-immanent courses" https://soziologie.univie.ac.at/info/pruefungen/#c56313).

Plagiarism software (Turnitin in Moodle) may be used during the assessment.
