Aims, contents and method of the course

When trying to define the content of sociology, Max Weber faced an ambiguous use of the word. Webers work crystallizes many of the theoretical issues that helped to constitute an empirical science of the social world. Such a science neither could adopt the model of natural sciences and their ahistorical laws, nor could it accept a relativistic position that is just able to describe historically unique situations in all their variety and complexity. A determined course of history was inadequate as it was an actor determined by some rational calculus. Weber established the category of social sense exactly at this point thus making intelligible relations beyond concrete situations but not beyond history itself. The course shall help to get an adequate idea of social theory by following the classical tradition of sociology. Starting from Simmel and Weber, we will reconstruct the positions of Schutz and Parsons. We also take Durkheim and Pareto into account who also worked on the foundations of a science that was adequate to understand the modern world.

Aims, contents and method of the course

- aktive Teilnahme an Diskussionsgruppen

- wöchentliche Abgabe von Literaturnotizen

- Übernahme eines Referats

- Abgabe eines Essays am Ende des Semesters

Ausgewählte Literatur:

- Georg Simmel (1895/1992): Zur Psychologie der Mode. Soziologische Studie. Frankfurt: Suhrkamp.

- Thorstein Veblen (1894): The Economic Theory of Woman's Dress. New York.
