Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Role is a key concept of modern social theory, integrating the perspectives of social action and social structure. Starting from classical writings on roles (Linton, Simmel), we will follow the emergence of role theory in Parsons, Merton and Goffman, its critique by Dahrendorf and the more recent discussion by Uta Gerhardt. This way we can show how role theory became the foundation of general sociology based on the category of life as all-comprising complex of action in the historical world. The theoretical foundations shall be used to understand contemporary issues concerning social change, professionalization and socialization.
