Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Societies are not static, but dynamic. Sociology includes the study of the developmental dynamics of modern societies, the drivers of their change, as well as upheavals and crises to ascertain how, when and why societies change, what the causes and consequences of changes in social orders are and how changes are perceived and interpreted by social actors. This seminar explores sociological answers to these questions focussing in particular on the paradigm of conflict theories and the role of social movements in processes of social change. The central focus is on teaching theories and research strategies that enable an historical as well as current examination of old and new social movements in the 20th and 21st centuries in the context of social conflict.
