    Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

    Content and methods
This course accompanies the lecture B5 Statistik in der Soziologie 2. The aim is to learn the basics of inferential statistics by working together on methods and calculations using calculators and SPSS (working with code). The use of the SPSS statistical software is practiced in the course; Students do not need to purchase a license.

    The following topics are covered:
    - Basics of inferential statistics
    - Probability distributions
    - Point and interval estimation
    - Hypotheses and statistical significance
    - Statistical tests
    - Applications of the contents in SPSS

    Study objectives
After completing this exercise you should have learned the following skills:
    * Be able to explain the basis of drawing conclusions from the sample about the population.
    * Calculate and interpret confidence intervals.
    * Understand normal distribution and other probability distributions and their applications in statistical testing.
    * Formulate testable hypotheses and know and calculate appropriate hypothesis tests.
    * Advanced skills in using SPSS statistical software and syntax evaluations.

The course is held in German.

If you have any questions, please send me an email: gwen.goeltl@univie.ac.at, subject “UE Statistik 2”. If you have any concerns about accessibility and inclusion in the exercise, please contact me by email.

    Assessment and permitted materials

In this course up to 100 points can be achieved. To pass 50% of points or more have to be achieved.

    The points are divided among:
    - Written assignements
    - A written midterm- and endtermtest
    - Handing in SPSS code from the sessions

The midterm and endterm-test are open book tests; You can use your notes, the literature and lecture notes. Submissions and tests are checked for plagiarism using Turnitin. If there is plagiarism in any part of the course work, an X will be entered instead of a grade for the entire exercise and the exercise must be repeated. Following the tests, an oral interview can be carried out as a plagiarism check/grade-relevant interview.

    Important Grading Information:
All students who received a place in the course are assessed if they have not deregistered from the course in due time or if they have not credibly shown an important reason for their failure to deregister after the cause for this reason does no longer apply
Students who credibly show an important reason (e.g. a longer illness) for the withdrawal from a course with continuous assessment are not assessed.
Whether this exception applies is decided by the lecturer. The request for deregistration must be submitted immediately.
For a positive assessment of the course, it is necessary to
positive completion of all parts of the course.
The plagiarism-detection service (Turnitin in Moodle) can be used in course of the grading.
The use of AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT) for the production of texts is only permitted if this is expressly requested by the lecturer (e.g. for individual work tasks).
In order to ensure good scientific practice, the lecturer can provide for a "grading-related discussion" of the written work submitted, which must be completed successfully.
If any requirement of the course has been fulfilled by fraudulent means, be it for example by cheating at an exam, plagiarizing parts of a written assignment or by faking signatures on an attendance sheet, the student's participation in the course will be discontinued, the entire course will be graded as "not assessed" and recorded accordingly.
You can find these and other provisions in the study law: https://satzung.univie.ac.at/studienrecht/.
In case you have received three negative assessments of a continuously assessed course and want to register for a fourth attempt, please make sure to contact the StudiesServiceUnit Sociology during the registration period (for more information see "third attempt for continuously assessed courses" https://soziologie.univie.ac.at/info/pruefungen/#c56313)

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In this course up to 100 points can be achieved. To pass 50 points or more have to be achieved. The points consist of: 20% written submissions; 70% a written midterm and final test; 10% the SPSS code worked on in the units.

    Grading key:
    90 to 100 points Very good (1)
    80 to 89 points Good (2)
    70 to 79 points Satisfactory (3)
    50 to 69 points Sufficient (4)
    0 to 49 points Insufficient (5)

Attendance in courses with continuous examination is mandatory. 80% attendance is expected. You may be absent from up to three units (20%) without giving a reason. If you have to miss more units, please email me as early as possible to discuss the possibility of divergence from this attendance policy.

    Examination topics

The course is assessed using two tests, the SPSS code and 3 tasks. The content of all submissions corresponds to the content of the units and the sections of the compulsory literature specified in the syllabus.

    * The tasks (20 points in total) must be submitted in Moodle; you will also find the exact deadlines there.
    * The content of the midterm and final test (35 points each) corresponds to the content covered in the exercise units.
    * Up to 10 points can be achieved by submitting the commented and executable SPSS code from all units.

    Reading list

In preparation for the units, you should read excerpts from Diaz-Bone “Statistics for Sociologists” (5th edition of 2019). Exact excerpts and other texts are listed in the syllabus and are available for download on Moodle
