    Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar focuses on the social and spatial dynamics in neighborhoods where people of diverse social and national backgrounds live together. Its aim is to develop a deeper understanding of the complex interactions between migration, housing, and social coexistence. Methodologically, the seminar combines theoretical and practical approaches: It begins with insights into current research and a joint visit to a municipal housing complex in Vienna. Each week, selected academic texts are read, worked on in the Moodle forum and discussed in the class. As the seminar progresses, independent research on relevant topics and their presentation in the seminar become central components. Assessment is based on active participation in discussions, independent research, presentations, and the final seminar paper. The seminar integrates approaches from urban and migration sociology. Participants reflect, based on the literature, on the challenges and opportunities of migration in the urban context as well as on living together in heterogeneous neighborhoods.
