Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Statistics 1 deals with descriptive statistics, that is the basic methods and strategies for analysing and interpreting quantitative data. A main focus is on assessing relationships between two variables. The aim of the lecture is to convey statistical knowledge which enables students to analyse data independently and to critically evaluate published results.
The lecture focuses on those methods that are commonly used in sociology. The examples are oriented at current sociological research and are usually based on the European Social Survey.

The following topics are covered in the lecture:
- Sampling and measurement
- Univariate frequency counts
- Measures of central tendency and dispersion
- Cross tables
- Graphical representation
- Measures of association for nominal, ordinal and interval data
- Statistical fallacies
- Big data

The lecture is accompanied by exercises and a tutorial.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be a written exam at the end of the semester (depending on the Covid situation either via Moodle online or in the lecture hall). Registration is through u:space. The exam will cover material from the lectures as well as the textbook. The lecture slides will be made available through moodle. A calculator and a sheet with formulas may be used during the exam (should the exam take place in the lecture hall).
