Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Societies are not static but dynamic. Sociology includes the study of the developmental dynamics of modern societies, the driving forces behind their change, as well as upheavals and crises: How, when and why do societies change? What are the drivers of changes in the social order? What are the consequences of change? How are changes perceived and interpreted by social actors? The course explores sociological answers to these questions and introduces students to the analysis of social structures and the sociology of social change. The main focus is on sociological theories and empirical research that enables an historical as well as current examination of phenomena of social change in a global context. The most important approaches to understanding social change on a micro-, meso- and macro-sociological level will be discussed. Furthermore, there will be an engagement with current academic debates and themes in current affairs from a sociological perspective.
