    Aims, contents and method of the course

    The sociology of social work represents a focus on sociology that has systematically dealt with research, reflection and theories of social work for several decades. To this end, sociology has examined methodological actions and fields of application of social work in classic and current works and has created conceptual tools, concept papers, needs surveys, impact studies and research funding applications for and with social work specialists.
    In this respect, the UE also aims at the following priorities:
    1. Students can identify and apply sociological theories of social work that structurally and historically explain the emergence and function of social work (welfare state security, empowerment, inclusion mediation) in modern/late modern societies.
    2. The students apply social theoretical principles in order to focus on problems in social work (inequality, social problems).
    3. Students apply sociological methods that justify research designs and the implementation of social planning and impact analysis studies.

    Assessment and permitted materials

    I) Four basic texts on theory and research in social work are made available and read. In a single choice test, large lines of the texts are asked (50% of the assessment).

    II) One of the following two tasks can be chosen, which make up the remaining 50% of the assessment:

    a) Ideal-typical sociologically responsible evaluation reports are available in which the effects of social work are discussed. These are processed and summarized using secondary analysis.

    b) Experts in the sociology of social work are interviewed on questions relating to the development of methodological concepts, needs and/or impact analyzes (e.g. development plan for disability assistance in Styria, social report of the state of Upper Austria, etc.) or develop a guide and an interpretation protocol for the expert* inside interview.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

    Compliance with attendance
    Participation in the single choice tests
    Participation in the exercises in the course (interviewing, simulation game)
